Takeaway Cultures – Durty Beanz

Durty Beanz is an Action Research group operating at the intersection of contemporary art practice and digital anthropology. In 2023, they were invited to create new work focusing on South Manchester’s blooming takeaway scene as part of 422 Arts’ 'Fooooood and What's In Between' annual project. The result, Takeaway Cultures, is an ongoing research and film project investigating the role and sociocultural function of global food cuisine takeaway outlets in the UK. The group undertook a series of research trips documenting the underlying narratives and cultures of food businesses around Rusholme, Longsight, and Levenshulme. Through interviews with restaurateurs, food journalists and digital anthropologists, they began to develop a body of research examining the culinary histories and contemporary economies of takeaway food in South Manchester, particularly as they relate to digital spaces.
